Expanding Horizons:
Harnessing
Innovation from India
"The biggest
American companies are now setting up R&D centres in India.
They are not coming for cheap labour in sweatshops. They are
coming for India’s brains."
—Times of India
R&D
executives today are squeezed by conflicting demands to
boost productivity while at the same time shortening product
lifecycles. In this pressure-cooker environment many
companies turn to distributed development that includes
emerging economies such as India. To date, much of this
activity has been to access non-core services.
In
corporate America, the new byword is Open Innovation. Do the
rapidly expanding middle-class driven markets and pools of
well-educated professional workforces in India provide good
reason to change the dynamics of product development? Is it
possible to source complete designs or "whole products" from
India? What are the opportunities for collaboration with
Indian universities and companies? Does an India team help
or hinder innovation?
Top
India expert and veteran Roundtable presenter Gunjan Bagla
is joined by R&D executive Dr. Atul Goel in a pragmatic and
far-reaching discussion of the trials, tribulations and
rewards of using an India-based development team.
